Absolutely amazing! When Act III ended, I was in complete shock. Speechless is truly the only way to describe my reaction. Sad? Yes. Slightly depressed? Oh yea. Inspired? Definitely.
Joss Whedon is the only director I know who can have you rolling on the floor in laughter until he decides the laughter should die. And then it’s gone. Just like that.
For the first 2 1/2 acts, we’re laughing and singing along, enjoying a lighthearted romp where the bad guy is actually the good guy and the hero is a SOB. Then, out of nowhere, it all ends. The show we thought we were watching changes from comedy to tragedy. Laughter is replaced with dumbfounded shock. Lighthearted lyrics are replaced with a dizzying need to figure out just what the hell is going on.
Part of me likes this because the emotions in a Joss Whedon production closely mirror life. (Ok, maybe not everyone’s, but definitely mine!) Have you ever been going happily along, positive your life is heading in one direction, whistling as you walk and then… BANG. In an instant, everything changes. The destination you were reaching is gone. Instead of heading to a Caribbean island, you find yourself harpooned on Siberia. I love how Joss Whedon can mirror those emotions so geniunely.
After just the first Act, I already cared a great deal about the characters. Some writers have a hard time getting their audience to care after several seasons! But Joss achieved it in just a few minutes. One reason most of us were so upset at the end of Act III is that somehow, in just a short amount of time, Joss developed characters that we cared about intensely.
It certainly helps that Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing actor.
As for Captain Hammer… His scenes were just priceless. He’s “that” guy. You know what I’m talking about… The one who believes his calling far eclipses everyone else. Oh sure, he pretends to care. But it’s all an act. Feeding the homeless? Just so he can look good. Serious relationship? Only so he show his girl off as a “trophy” to his friends and fans.
“Deltoids of compassion, abs of being kind.” Hammer’s song in Act III is pure ROTFL. According to him, anyone can rise above their circumstances (unless they’re a “freaking ‘tard.”) And we all have enemies (though none as cool as his!)
Of course, the show-stealer was Billy. Penny waited for him at the laundromat with an extra yogurt, but he never showed up. The message? Revenge destroys. Sure, you might get everything you wanted in the process. But in the end, revenge will only steal away what you love the most.
And that’s how it ended. Dr. Horrible got his dream, but the cost was too great. Now it all means nothing.
Remember Act II?
Billy: “Don’t say everything happens for a reason.”
Penny: “I was just going to say… Everything happens.”
Yes, it sure does.

I think another watch is worthwhile before it goes off the air. Now waiting for the release of the DVD, and yes, Joss Whedon most definitely inspires.
Whatever format Dr Horrible takes from here on out, I’m looking forward to it!

What a great synopsis. You highlighted all the best parts without revealing too much. I felt the exact same way when it ended. I sat there feeling like I just got blind sided by a train or something. I couldn’t believe it was over and ended like that. It all made sense but…NO!!!! It took me a day to come to terms with the ending.
I bought it on iTunes so I can watch it whenever I want but I’ll be getting the DVD, too.
What i liked best was that for a musical the songs didn’t feel intrusive. Most musical (at least modern ones) always feel forced. It seems fake that suddenly everyone breaks into song. With Dr. Horrible I barely noticed the singing, it just blended so well and the songs went perfectly with what was going on. I loved the Dr. Horrible/Penny songs.
The whole thing was just…awesome. Joss Whedon is a genius.

I was really, really mad at the end of the third act. Then I thought, “He kind of did Les Mis in a half an hour. Which is definitely genius.
Then I went back to being really, really mad again.

It was brilliant. I just finished watching it for the second time (before it went away). Like everything Whedon seems to do, it was very funny, but also very poignant. I like that about him.
I really should go back and watch Buffy now that I’m a Whedon convert…

amazing post which completely captures everything I felt when I watching this superb piece of filmmaking. It’s unique release made it feel all the more special and I felt honoured to have been able to watch it. Sounds sad, I know, but this is how I felt!

[...] I watched the final act of Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog on Saturday and was not disappointed. Surprised? Yes. Moved? Yes. Entertained? Absolutely. I just read Stephanie’s post about this piece of filmaking history and she hit the nail on the head. I’m mad, but for a different reason. I thought I had one more day (last Saturday) to view the rest of Act II and all of Act III that I hadn’t gotten to before they went to pay-only on Sunday. But by the time I got to them Saturday afternoon, they were already removed from the free site. Ah well, now I’ll never see them…

Literarydeadkittens (your name is cracking me up!) – The musical just gets better each time you watch it.
Jen – You’re right. The songs just flowed perfectly into the script. More Whedon genius!
Melody – LOL! I still have moments when I wish the ending had been happier. I really wanted them to be together!
Aaron – You should. Buffy has that Whedon trademark humor mixed with angst & sorrow.
Kate – Me too! I heard they might be making a sequel.
Barry – Oh no!!!
